Winter Concert – Konzert

These lines not only gave Anna Clyne’s 2019 orchestral work its title but also its distinctive atmosphere, oscillating between anger, wit, and vehemence. Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major was already enshrined in the canon of music history at its premiere in 1879 by the work’s dedicatee, the violinist Joseph Joachim, as the new piece was followed in the program by Bach’s famous Chaconne in D minor and, finally, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, which is also on the program for this winter concert. Combined with Clyne’s sharp symphonic characterization, the Symphony Orchestra’s winter concert presents a theatrical and wilder side of Brahms’s Op. 77 in a program rich in contrasts that musically explores darkness—with music that is meticulously planned and clearly structured in every respect.
